The underside of this seismic mezzanine shows the modified Type 1 AISC fully restrained connection utilized by Porta-King Building Systems for mezzanines constructed in highly seismic locations.
This type of connection is used to connect the beams to the columns of our seismic mezzanine to create the sufficient lateral load resistance for these potentially extreme seismic conditions. As a standard, all of our mezzanines are designed in compliance with the new IBC (International Building Code). The new code requires a seismic mezzanine to be designed to accommodate greater lateral loading than required by previous codes. In addition, the areas of seismic concerns cover a much broader area than required under the former national codes. Utilizing this design allows us to create a code compliant seismic mezzanine without the use of cross bracing, knee bracing or other forms of bracing that would substantially effect the useable space underneath the mezzanine.
This seismic mezzanine included a fully assembled stairs with an intermediate landing. The intermediate landing was included to accommodate a special requirement. A freight elevator had to be used in order to get the seismic mezzanine materials to the area of construction. Porta-King modified our standard fully assembled stair into two shorter sections in order to fit into the elevator. This special requirement was uncovered during an on-site visit with the customer to review site conditions. We offer this service free of charge to help our customers identify these types of requirements prior to fabrication.
