| Structural Steel Mezzanine with Seismic Beam to Column Connections |
The underside of this structural steel mezzanine shows the modified Type 1 AISC fully restrained connection utilized in the design of Porta-King’s PK Structures for mezzanines constructed in highly seismic locations. The design used to create this seismic beam-to-column connection creates the sufficient lateral load resistance for the potentially extreme seismic conditions that exist for the location of this installation.
As a standard, all of our mezzanines are designed in compliance with the IBC (International Building Code). The code requires a structural steel mezzanine to be designed to accommodate greater lateral loading than required by previous codes. In addition, the areas of seismic concerns cover a much broader area than required under the former national codes. Utilizing this design allows us to create a code compliant seismic mezzanine without the use of cross bracing, knee bracing or other forms of bracing that would substantially affect the useable space underneath the structure.
This structure included a fully assembled stairs with an intermediate landing. The intermediate landing was incorporated into the design to address a special project requirement. For this particular application, the installation crew had to use a freight elevator to transfer the structural steel components to a difficult to access location in the plant. Porta-King modified our standard fully assembled stair into two shorter sections in order to fit into the elevator. This issue was uncovered during an on-site visit with the customer to review site conditions. We offer this service free of charge to help our customers identify these types of requirements prior to fabrication.
