| Range Tower at Air Force Base |
This 40’ range tower and prefabricated cab were installed at a U.S. Air Force Base at an undisclosed southwestern desert location. In this photograph you can see the new Porta-King range tower (left) along with the existing structure that this new structure is replacing.
This new structure will serve as the base of operations for air force personnel monitoring and evaluating the practice sessions of jet pilots firing rockets and dropping bombs on pre-determined targets.
The platform on top includes a catwalk and guard rail on three sides to allow personnel to safely walk around the cab. A stair with intermediate landings circles the tower to provide access while minimizing the footprint of the structure. The air force selected a corrosion resistant galvanized finish for the steel. The deck of the tower includes a galvanized bar grate to allow rain water to pass through and avoid slick spots that could be created by pooling.
For this particular project Porta-King supplied a turn-key installation which included foundation design, materials and installation. As with all towers, we supplied detailed approval drawings for review prior to fabrication. In addition, engineering calculations and wet stamped drawings are typically supplied to confirm both structures are designed to withstand applicable wind loads and potential seismic exposure for the area. Because Porta-King manufactures both towers and the prefabricated cabs, we assume full responsibility for the fit and finish of both products.
