- Work platforms to provide researchers with a safe environment in which to work and help engineers, welders, and other skilled laborers access high or hard-to-reach areas safely.
- Equipment platforms to keep equipment safe from unauthorized access and seismic events
- Storage platforms to keep materials safely out of the way of the main floor
When it comes to storing or operating expensive or sensitive equipment, military bases need it to be as efficient and safe as possible. Here’s one conflict of interest you may have encountered: Equipment needs to be easily accessible at any moment, but when it’s not in use, equipment on the floor can get in the way of military operations.
Elevating equipment with equipment platforms keeps everyone and everything safe from potential abuse or damage as military personnel work nearby. These platforms can hold equipment like HVACs, air compressors, and other equipment critical to base operations.
Added Security Increases Workplace Safety
Equipment platforms can be designed with a gate to allow only those who are permitted to interact with the equipment to gain access to it. This measure prevents potential injury to personnel or accidental damage to equipment. [Read more…]
Porta-King has designed new office space for Scott Air Force Base (SAFB) to merge an entire department that was relocating from another building. This unique project required Porta-King to work within the support structure of a very old building to create the mezzanine bays and modular offices required for the new space.
Reusing Older Buildings Reduced Overall Cost
Mezzanines can be installed in buildings at a fraction of the cost and time it would need to build new space. Since there was enough usable ceiling space available in a pre-existing building, there was no need for SAFB to build an entirely new structure to accommodate the move. [Read more…]
Power plants are important to our country as they are the main source of producing power for home and businesses. If something goes wrong and the power plant shuts down, thousands of people will be left without power. To prevent this scenario, power plants have to make sure that they run as reliably, efficiently, and safely as possible.
St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield, Illinois was concerned that only a ladder was being used to reach HVAC units on their roof. This system posed many safety threats, especially during inclement weather. Porta-King was able to negate these concerns by installing a rooftop catwalk in a timely manner while taking into consideration preexisting structures.
Mezzanines as Catwalks
Mezzanines aren’t just for adding more work space or to create reinforcing structures to support machinery. They can also be used as catwalks. Catwalks are used to access spaces above the ground floor, like along a roof connecting buildings together. [Read more…]
The petroleum and gas industry can be a dangerous place to work, especially since many workers have to regularly work at great heights. Even if the height is not extreme, workers can still be in danger of falling onto a machine, causing serious injury or death.
Thankfully, unlike in the yesteryear of workplace safety, many precautions are taken to ensure worker safety—particularly in high-risk environments like petroleum and gas worksites.
Falls Are the Most Common Workplace Accident
In 2013, falls accounted for over 4,000 deaths, making it the most common workplace accident. Thankfully, with strict guidelines and workplace safety laws, those numbers are down. But accidents do happen. The most common cause of falling is tripping due to: [Read more…]
This past April, NASA received one of its first shipments of work platforms for the Space Launch System (SLS) project. The original work platforms in the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) were removed in 2013 to make way for these newer platforms that will help lead the way in the construction of the SLS.
A Quick Rundown of the SLS Project
At its most basic, the SLS is a launch vehicle designed to send craft into deep space and support “the highest-ever payload mass and volume capability and energy to speed missions through space,” according to NASA. It will be integrated with the Orion spacecraft as well as smaller “CubeSats” as secondary payloads to be deployed later on in flight. In short, it will be multitasking—something other exploration-class spacecraft have not yet done. [Read more…]
Mezzanines are not only for factory or warehouse use. They are also useful in other environments such as research facilities. Research centers are dedicated to researching a specific area of sciences. In research facilities, modular mezzanines can be used for:
- Work platforms
- Accessing tall machinery
Providing a Safe Working Environment
Employee safety is important no matter where the work takes place. All mezzanines have safety features like:
When building your modular mezzanine, it is important to know if the connections can hold up against both lateral and gravity loads. (Gravity loads exert a downwards force and lateral loads exert a sideways one.) One way to ensure your modular mezzanine remains stable is by using a gusseted type 3 connection.
What is a Gusseted Type 3 Connection?
A gusseted type 3 connection is designed to provide optimal resistance under appropriate seismic conditions by connecting the beam directly to the column, providing a direct load path. The intent of these connections is to “lock” the beams to the columns so they act as a rigid frame. Rigid frames remain at a 90 degree angle when pushed by external forces. [Read more…]
As discussed in previous blogs, retrofitting older buildings with modular offices rather than build new helps improve efficiency, thus reducing overall costs. But what are the benefits of renovating a building versus building a brand new one? Renovating can:
- Can be done in stages
- Reduce climate change impacts
- Have money-saving incentives
Construct in Stages
By retrofitting your building with modular offices, the construction can be done in stages instead of all at once, especially if you have a limited budget. Budget constraints are the main reason why many businesses don’t participate in green retrofitting. By completing smaller projects when you need them, you can save up for the next project and be sure that it is what is wanted. [Read more…]
