Our truly pre-engineered design makes it easy and economical way to create additional floor space without the added expense of a building addition. The heavy-duty structural steel components include factory installed connecting angles and clips to enable quick and easy assembly on-site.
Our mezzanine systems are designed to create highly functional space anywhere inside your facility. The pre-engineered components that we provide to construct our mezzanines are designed to be easy to install so your down time in the area of construction is dramatically reduced when compared to conventional construction. Porta-King Mezzanines are constructed of the highest quality american materials to provide the most durable structures that will provide years of trouble free service.

You can also click on the links listed to the right to see these same features along with additional construction options not shown in this mezzanine illustration. We offer a wide array of construction options that enable our customers to design a mezzanine specifically suited to meet their unique application requirements.
Framing
Columns & Base Plates

Porta-King uses all structural steel tubing in all columns. Ranging in size from 5" square up to and including 8" square tubing. Larger column sections result in greater column rigidity than equal weight columns with smaller sections. Column centers are custom designed to meet your needs. Reducing interference with existing operations. Centered base plates maximize stability and reduce sway.
Beams

We use all wide flange beams which are by design symetrical and concentrate steel at the flanges and radii to provide the greatest strength and point load capacity as well as a thinner deck than those supported by bar joist or cold formed channel construction.
Connections
Our standard design is the partially restrained Type 3 for beam to column connection. This method of connecting the beam to the column improves rigidity and the overall horizontal stiffness of the mezzanine.
We also offer our fully restrained Type 1 connection for geographical areas with extremely high seismic forces. This is the most rigid connection available. It provides a solid beam to column where necessary while still eliminating the need for knee or "x" bracing which interfere with access and traffic such as forklifts and material movers.
The standard beam to beam or purlin to girder connection is a Type 2 connection. A very strong connection providing superior strength throughout the structure.
All attachment angles, tees and seats are fully welded to attachment components. This eliminates confusion created when all of these components ship loose for installation on site. Factory installation of all of these components dramatically reduces installation time.
Decking
Standard OSB on 20 Gauge Steel Roof Deck
Our standard decking consists of one layer of 3/4" T&G, OSB (oriented strand board) installed over 20 gauge x 1-1/2" deep, corrugated steel deck. OSB provides good resistance to foot traffic and can handle random wheel loads up to 300 lbs. The steel decking has a white painted underside to provide maximum light reflectance. This is our most economical and durable selection for general storage and office applications.
Bar Grate 1" x 1/8"

A strong and economical alternative, bar grating allows for air movement, light, and water from overhead sprinklers to pass through deck surface. Nominal 1" x 4" opening. Black finish is standard. Also available in a galvanized finish. This material should not be used for pallet jack applications. Also, should not be used as a substitute for sprinkling. Consult your local building department for more information.
Steel Checker Plate on OSB
Heavy-duty 14 gauge steel checker plate has a diamond embossed surface. OSB is 3/4" tongue and groove over a 20 gauge corrugated steel deck. This deck option provides a much higher level of durability with increased point and wheel load capacities.
Steel Checker Plate on 20 Gauge Steel Roof Deck

This is a heavy duty mezzanine decking system designed for use on projects that require non-combustible materials, 12 gauge steel checker plate is fastened directly to the steel roof deck. Steel checker plate is diamond-embossed to provide a non-skid surface. Top surface of tread plate can be shipped unfinished or painted. 20 gauge deck has a white painted underside for better lighting.
High Density Composite Flooring on 20 Gauge Roof Deck

This decking material is highly recommended for mezzanines floors that will require the use of heavy pallet jacks, carts or dollies. High Density Flooring has an extremely durable, cleanable surface. Available in Basic, Deluxe Clear or Gray finishes. The high end of mezzanine flooring for wheel loads up to 450 lbs., 900 lbs., 1350 lbs. and pallet jack loads of 1500 lbs, 2500 lbs, 4000 lbs.
4" Concrete on 20 Gauge Roof Deck

With concrete you will experience the strongest and most durable mezzanine flooring available. When you use this type of deck high point loading and capacity is never a problem. Concrete density dramatically reduces noise transmission through the floor. 20 gauge steel deck is provided with edge trim necessary to allow on site pour of 4-inch concrete floor.
Stairs
Stair Design
Stair assembly will have treads factory welded to stringers. Stair width shall not be less than 36”. Treads will be designed such that the openings between treads is less than 4 inches creating a closed design. Completely closed “Solid Risers“ as defined by the IBC are only required when safe egress for people with disabilities is a facility or local code requirement . Maximum rise per tread shall not exceed 7”. Minimum run per tread shall not be less than 11”. Stair shall maintain a minimum headroom clearance of 6’-8”. Stringer and tread components shall have a chemistry, which equals or exceeds that of ASTM A36 requirements. The stair stringers will be a minimum of MC10x8.4. The treads will be steel treadplate with a minimum thickness of 12 gauge, formed to facilitate a “closed” riser.
Guard Rails
Guard Rails

Guard rail will be a 42” high, two-rail design and maintain a minimum clearance between rails. All railing shall have a minimum of a 4” high kickplate. Guard rail shall be assembled at the factory to be comprised as a welded, one-piece assembly. The guardrail shall fasten directly to the mezzanine deck to achieve maximum strength and rigidity. The chemistry of the steel will equal or exceed that of ASTM A500-Grade B requirements. All rails will be 1 ½” square tubing. Guardrails to be surfaced mounted to the deck surface without the intrusion of columns protruding through the deck surface. All guardrails shall be fastened to the deck surface using 3/8” x 2 ½” lag screws. In some instances the guard rail will be designed to meet additional requirements such as “Public Access” where a 4” sphere may not pass between the balusters. Or a 3 rail design that meets different code requirements for areas that do not use the IBC code to the letter.
Finish: Clear Satin Anodized with a lower panel insert that matches interior and exterior of wall surfaces.
Gates
6' Swing Gate

Our most popular gate is designed with 2, 36" wide, in-swinging leaves to allow for fork lift access to the edge of the deck.
6' Sliding Gate

This gate is designed to be less intrusive into the mezzanine deck area. It is a design unique to Porta-King in that it has shielded rollers that are difficult to damage as they are fully enclosed in the lower rail of the gate. This gate can only be used on a deck with an 18' or greater length.
6' Lift Out Gate

We manufacture our lift out gate to be easy to handle and light weight. It literally lifts out of the opening when access is required.
6' Pivot gate
Our pivot gate is an alternative to the sliding gate. It takes up less space along the mezzanine edge than the sliding gate. Yet it is compact and fits where the swing gate will not.
6' Corral Gate

When Porta-King designed our corral gate we did it with the operator in mind. This is a safety gate in nature and will protect the user from any type of fall accident. No access is allowed while the gate is in use but the deck edge is completely accessible to the lift operator below. Be sure to ask about the Porta-King Corral gate.
