The Challenge: Building a Specialized Testing Environment for Corrosion Research
Picatinny Arsenal, a leader in military research and innovation, required a highly specialized space to conduct saltwater spray testing on newly designed equipment. These tests simulate harsh environmental conditions and involve the use of heated salt solution to generate excessive condensation. The testing area needed to be both corrosion-resistant and ventilated effectively to manage this condensation and ensure a safe, controlled environment. Additionally, Picatinny was looking for a solution that could be installed quickly with minimal disruption to their day-to-day operations.
The Solution: Custom Modular Room Built with Versa-King
To meet the unique demands of this project, Porta-King designed and installed a 10’ tall, 16’ x 16’ custom modular room built with 3″ Versa-King modular wall systems. The resistance to impact, moisture and corrosion that fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) offers made it the perfect choice for both interior and exterior surfaces. All framing used maintenance-free anodized aluminum, providing additional corrosion resistance to support long-term durability in a demanding environment.
We also subcontracted with a local mechanical contractor to install an extraction ventilation system. This system safely removes condensation created when the heated salt spray is released during testing, helping to maintain both equipment performance and a comfortable interior climate.
