The Challenge: Reducing Noise and Visual Disruption in an Open Factory Environment
A power supply company needed a dedicated space within its Hauppauge, NY facility to conduct loud, high-voltage testing for an apprentice technician. The testing process generated sound levels up to 85 dB and, at the time, was conducted in an open factory setting, where both the noise and visibility of the operation disrupted adjacent work areas. The company needed an enclosure that would reduce sound, improve safety and minimize the visual impact of testing.
The Solution: Sound-Reducing Versa-King Modular Enclosure
Porta-King designed a 3-wall, 24’ x 20’ x 14’-6” tall modular enclosure using Versa-King 3″ panels. The interior featured black vinyl drywall for a controlled dark-room setting, and the exterior was finished in gray vinyl for a cohesive look. To address the noise levels and ensure thermal protection, Porta-King incorporated several layers of sound-reducing and insulating materials:
- R-19 batt insulation inside the panel walls
- 3/16” sound barrier laminated to ½” plywood over exterior steel roof decking
- Steel roof decking with maintenance load rating
- Drop ceiling for additional sound and visual containment
- Insulated double doors for secure, quiet entry and exit
