Security guards, military personnel and other government officials have a tough enough job without worrying about the safety of their post. At Porta-King, we build quality bullet proof buildings to ensure a protected enclosure for those who may be threatened in the workplace.
It’s important to note that although ‘bullet proof’ is the widely used commercial term for such buildings, the more accurate term is ‘bullet resistant.’ The degree of bullet resistance is based on U.L. rating (Underwriters Laboratory) 1 through 8 and NIJ (National Institute of Justice) threat level rating from I-IV.
U.L. Ratings
Level 1 – 9 mm Full Metal Copper Jacket with Lead Core
Level 2 – .367 Magnum Jacketed Lead Soft Point
Level 3 – .44 Magnum Lead Semi-Wadcutter Gas Checked
Level 4 – .30 Caliber Rifle Lead Core Soft Point
Level 5 – 7.62mm Rifle Lead Core Full Metal Copper Jacket Military Ball (.308 Caliber)
Level 6 – 9mm Full Metal Copper Jacket with Lead Core
Level 7 – 5.56mm Rifle Full Metal Copper Jacket with Lead Core
Level 8 – 7.62mm Rifle Lead Core Full Metal Copper Jacket Military Ball (.308 Caliber)
NIJ Threat Level Ratings
Level I – .22 long rifle high velocity lead and .38 special round nose lead
Level II – .357 Magnum jacketed soft point and 9mm full metal jacket
Level III – 7.62mm (.308 Winchester)
Level IIIA – .44 Magnum and 9mm full metal jacket
Level IV – .30-.06 armor piercing
Porta-King offers buildings in all levels and we will work with our customers to satisfy all project requirements and deliver a product that meets their needs. Each bullet proof building will be delivered fully assembled for hassle free installation on the premises. Clean Rooms can be useful in a wide variety of industries from computing to pharmaceuticals. Since the main goal of modular clean rooms is to reduce contamination and air pollutants while controlling temperature, cleanliness and security are essential factors. There is little room for error and a faulty cleanroom is simply not acceptable. Even a small leak or malfunction could jeopardize the integrity of an experiment or manufacturing process.
We know that depending on the facility and type of work being done, cleanrooms can have different specifications. Defining your cleanroom standards and knowing the manufacturing requirements can help narrow your choices when choosing a cleanroom. For example, most cleanrooms are positive-pressure rooms, built to filter air and keep a room free from contamination. But there are also negative-pressure rooms that are used to keep pathogens and infectious diseases contained within a space.
Size is also a factor when considering what type of cleanroom to purchase. What is the layout of the cleanroom? How many people will be going in and out? How much equipment will you need? It’s important to have flexibility when choosing your cleanroom in case amenities such as an air shower need to be added. Our modular clean rooms allow for additions and layout changes without a rebuild. You should be able to expand your cleanroom if the need occurs. Modular clean rooms also allow for easy dismantling, in case your facility moves to a new location.
You should also consider air conditioning needs. As more workers are stationed in your cleanroom, think of the additional body heat, machinery and cleanroom clothing like masks and goggles. It’s important that your workers stay comfortable in their environment. Take note of whether you need a single pass room, (where the air is pumped in from the top and blown out through the bottom) or a recirculating design that allows the air to recycle and saves on air conditioning costs.
PortaKing has over 40 years of experience manufacturing modular clean rooms and other specialty enclosures. Contact us for your next prefabricated building solution.

Have you ever found yourself lacking in warehouse space? This may seem like a pretty big problem, but the solution could be simpler than you think. Instead of spending thousands of dollars constructing a new warehouse, building an addition on your current warehouse or renting a new space that may come with cumbersome restrictions or limitations, consider investing in a warehouse mezzanine to create extra space when things are getting too close for comfort.
Raised platforms or warehouse mezzanines can be built at a fraction of the cost of relocating or purchasing new warehouse space. They can be built quickly and account for minimal business interruption and distractions during their construction. Warehouse mezzanines are also incredibly flexible. We know that no two businesses are the same and as such each warehouse mezzanine must be configured to fit each company’s individual needs.
In additional to spatial restrictions, sometimes just the basic layout of a warehouse can present limitations. A poor design can severely hinder the capability of a warehouse. Now in most cases, a warehouse can be properly organized to boost productivity and account for the safety of both product and employees. When this is not the case, it may be necessary to call in for reinforcements. If a warehouse has an unmanageable floor plan or is in a general state of disarray, consider incorporating a mezzanine. A well-designed warehouse mezzanine can optimize efficiency and compensate for a less than perfect interior structure.
Another place where a warehouse may be lacking is office space. With bulky equipment and unwieldy boxes, an acceptable office space may be a luxury you think you can’t afford. Consider a mounted office space, a raised mezzanine to provide a clean, out-of-the-way space that won’t interfere with any production or assembly that might be taking place below.
Portaking has over 100 years of combined experience in designing modular mezzanines. Browse different designs in our mezzanine gallery and feel free to contact us with any questions.

In recent years, th e United States has updated its food security models giving food processing and distribution facilities the opportunity to strengthen their security measures and prevent potential acts of intentional contamination. Food safety awareness has also been further heightened by worldwide aspects related to terrorist and bioterrorist activities.
When is comes to implementing security plans, careful precise planning is a definite must. Every inch of a processing or distribution plant must be accounted for in terms of total operational awareness and coverage. For company staff assigned the responsibility of laying out security, guard and access control systems, there’s nothing more important than attention to detail.
The very detail-driven nature of security lends itself well to custom products that can be built efficiently to suit any prescribed design. St. Louis-based modular and prefabricated building manufacturer Porta-King Building Systems provides the food processing and distribution industry with custom guard booths, buildings, towers and platforms designed to suit new and existing layouts demanding a specific set of dimensions, options and features to be effective. The company has been in the business of manufacturing custom security facilities for some 40 years.
Porta-King offers custom design as a standard, because it allows customers a key component of their overall plan that will work around their existing framework. Providing a wide-variety of security products is a unique aspect of our business. What works for one particular customer’s layout and schematics will more than likely not be an exact fit for the next customer – that’s why we provide custom design solutions at no additional cost.
Porta-King customers can also choose between galvanized steel and anodized aluminum construction. Most Porta-King guard building models can also be designed to include ballistic rated construction. On-site installation and field support are available to help customers become fully operational as quickly and effectively as possible.
By building our structures in-house and providing the option of off-load and anchoring, we’re able to eliminate the inevitable downtime and hassles that come with traditional construction. Turnkey installation and field support give customers the efficiency and quality they require.
Porta-King manufactures a full line of prefabricated towers and platforms to create elevated guard booths and buildings. Our structural steel mezzanine systems are a cost-effective way to add pre-engineered height and perspective in order to elevate security personnel for an unrestricted view of an entire operation.

A German ba sed manufacturer of high end ceramic filters contracted with our customer to design and build a series of robots to produce filters in their newly constructed $44 million dollar manufacturing facility in Germany. A critical element in the design of these robots was an environmentally controlled room to protect the robots from plant dust and adverse temperature swings.
After completion of the design and fabrication of the robots, our customer had to demonstrate to their customer the complete procedure of fabrication of the filters and test run the system at their facility in Upstate New York. After their customers approval, the whole system was broken down and shipped to Germany where it would be reconstructed at their new manufacturing facility.
There were several reasons our customer selected Porta-King modular rooms to create these enclosures:
Outstanding insulation values.
Durable construction features.
Their customer wanted enclosures with a “high-tech” appearance to compliment their new “state of the art” facility.
System flexibility that made it easy to change the wall configuration from solid panel to framed opening, or door to window.
Ease of assembly.
Flexibility that facilitated take down and reassembly in Germany with a 100% recapture of their initial materials investment.

Straps in place the prefab shelter begins the journey up to the eigth floor.
The shelter is lowered into position on top of the existing concrete curb.
Well this was one for the books. The challenge wasn’t supplying a 12′ wide x 22′ long shelter…we build those all the time. The challenge was lifting it to it’s final resting place that was eight floors up on top of a downtown parking deck. All and all the project went pretty smoothly. The crane arrived early in the morning with all the necessary equipment. The prefab shelter was waiting on the back of a 40′ flat bed truck. About 30 minutes later our crew had completed the process of securing the lifting straps to the factory installed lifting rings. From there the shelter began it’s journey up to it’s new home.
The entire process took less than 3 hours. A considerable time savings compared to constructing the shelter on-site. As you can see from the photos this prefab shelter included full perimeter glazing and an integral roof. Once the shelter was positioned on to the top of the concrete curb our crew installed anchors to complete the installation.

The sales team and Porta-King are constantly challenged with the question,” will your products help us in this situation”. In fact, some of our greatest innovations have been initiated by a challenge presented to us by one of our customers. The old saying, “desperation is the father of invention”, has real meaning to guys like me out in the field who are challenged with devising solutions to our customers needs. The good news for me is that I have a great team of design experts to support me with innovative solutions utilizing Porta-King modular wall systems.
The extensive heat this summer presented this challenge. “How can we get some heat relief to our employees? Not only are our customers concerned about the reduction in productivity caused by overheated employees but first and foremost they are concerned about their health and well being.
We designed custom modular “Cool Rooms” that fit the bill. These units were designed to be climate controlled and offered full perimeter visibility of the work area. The layout of each room is custom designed to fit the application. Our standard Versa-King modular wall consists of a 3” thick sandwich panel and can include R values of 10 to 13 depending on the composition of the wall. Higher R values can be achieved by incorporating some of the thicker wall construction options available with our Monolith modular wall system.
In addition to the thermal insulation we will often use some of our sound reduction techniques to improve the overall environment inside the Cool Room.
For this particular application, our customer had some of the rooms assembled on site while others were brought in from our factory already assembled and simply slid into place. Our factory assembled models, like the one shown in this photo, include an integrated floor structure are highly portable. These units were used for those rooms that would be moved frequently from location to location. Both of these modular options enable our customers to quickly and easily create comfort for their employees wherever it is needed on the plant floor.
We can also utilize a Porta-King mezzanine to elevate these modular “Cool Rooms” into the unused space above the plant floor. This not only frees up existing floor space for other activities but also provides the inhabitants with better visibility of plant floor operations.
We have many standard offerings as well as full custom capabilities to meet your unique construction application challenge. We promise to get it right for you.
Remember stay cool, and when the winter winds blow these units will switch roles and allow for a place to warm up.

I recently was invited to participate in a project that included a number of unique challenges. This project had to be completed on a tight timeline. The timeline in conjunction with its sophistication and special requirements was causing my customer a great deal of concern. The project was to create a series of quality control testing rooms for a major plastics and resin manufacturer with a plant in mid-Michigan. Each room contained laboratory custom cabinetry and state-of-the-art electronics. After a visiting with the customer to review site conditions and to discuss the details of the control room we were able to start the process of defining the scope of work that we would be offering in our bid.
The customer was high on the idea of utilizing modular construction because they had already seen the speed at which the product could be installed in a series of previous projects. As a result they selected Porta-King to make these rooms for this current project. The ultimate use for the labs would be to do quality control checks of plastics and resins. The labs were necessary to control dust, humidity and temperature at acceptable levels while tests were conducted. We had to have a special window and sill height because the top of the wire mold had to fall even with the sill height. We did this to accommodate all of the special electronic equipment that the customer had going into these rooms. The customer ordered six quality control labs and was very pleased with not only the quality of the material but with the ease of installation in such a complicated industrial environment.

Prefabricated steel structures offer fall protection for employees
St. Louis based Porta-King, manufacturer of prefabricated building systems, offers custom designed platforms to warehouses, manufacturing and processing facilities across the country. The steel, prefabricated platforms, offer fall protection for at risk personnel, easing safety concerns.
“Our fall protection platforms provide safety for personnel that need to access areas in a facility that may be considered dangerous or high risk,” said Gregg Pearlstone, vice president at Porta-King. “We recently installed a two-story exterior platform at a nitrogen processing facility so employees could safely monitor and adjust control valves on the tank systems.”
In response to safety concerns, many facilities are turning to options that protect employees, while working with existing conditions of the facility.
“Many companies want to ensure the safety of their personnel, especially when they perform the high risk parts of their job,” Pearlstone said. “We can provide safety options with minimal impact or interruption in the daily activities of the facility.”
In addition to providing fall protection, Porta-King’s platforms are a quick and affordable alternative to conventional construction. Using the company’s unique prefabricated structures allows for construction of the platforms to go up close to 40-percent faster than traditional onsite construction of a structure.
“Our prefabricated mezzanine structures can be erected in just a few days, instead of a few weeks as it would with conventional construction, and at a much lower cost,” Pearlstone said. “Our systems are designed to enable faster and easier installation.”
To demonstrate their commitment to providing unmatched quality and service, Porta-King provides onsite-surveying to ensure every structure is built to match specific project requirements. All fall protection platforms are built in strict compliance with the IBC 2006.
Porta-King has been a leader in custom-designed prefabricated construction solutions since 1969. Porta-King also manufacturers prefabricated exterior structures for a wide assortment of applications, including guard buildings, guard and range towers, parking attendant booths and custom equipment enclosures. Porta-King’s prefabricated building systems provide shelter, storage, safety and security solutions for virtually any application where conventional construction has been traditionally utilized.
